EPA FEDERAL REGISTER /VOLUME 86. No. 95/ WEDNESDAY, MAY 19, 2021/ RULES AND REGULATIONS page 27325
I.“Changes to 49 CFR 136.3 To Include Alternate Test Procedures (ATPs)” Lists the KwikCount™ ECMedium E. coli enzyme substrate test as approved. (It also lists it as being obtained from Micrology Laboratories, LLC, 1303 Eisenhower Drive, Goshen, IN 45326.) That Corporate name was changed to Roth Bioscience, LLC as of June 3, 2019.

II. TABLE IH---“LIST OF APPROVED MICROBIOLOGICAL METHODS FOR AMBIENT WATER” ALSO LISTS KwikCount™ EC.
Compared to other current testing methods, KwikCount® MF EC massively decreases the amount of time needed to not only detect the presence of E. coli but also the number of colonies.
- EPA Approved for ambient waters
- Results in as little as 8 hours under long-wave UV light
- Extremely accurate and easy-to-understand results
- 1 bottle has enough media for 10 tests
- Beginning about 14-16 hrs incubation, the E.coli colonies will not only fluoresce in UV light but will also appear as blue/purple colonies in ambient light.
How It Works
KwikCount® MF EC works similarly to other membrane filters (MF) media, following the standard methodology using a membrane filtration device. However, unlike other membrane filter mediums, KwikCount results can be read in 8-20 hours of incubation at 41±0.5°C under long-wave light.
The KwikCount® MF EC method, therefore, incorporates and includes the advantages of utilizing a Duogen®. When the blue fluorescence has dissipated, the E.coli colonies will continue to be present as blue/purple colonies that may continue in growth and intensify color. The blue/purple colonies should not be counted after 48 hrs incubation.
To enumerate, simply count the number of visible colonies (CFUs). For more detailed documentation and instructions, please see the PDFs below. Remember, we offer free technical support at any stage of the process and would be happy to instruct and advise you.

Additional Helpful and Important Information
Why KwikCount® MF EC is Better Than Competing Products
Compared to other current testing methods, KwikCount® astronomically decreases the time required for E. coli detection and enumeration. Not only is it faster, but KwikCount® is also extremely easy to read. Simply count the number of fluorescent dots while viewing your filter under UV light.
Additional Equipment Needed
KwikCount® MF EC is a membrane filtration medium that requires standard equipment for any membrane filtration process. If you’re looking for a method of detecting E.coli, but do not have the standard equipment, you might be more interested in our self-contained R-CARD® testing method that requires minimal additional equipment.
